History past and present for the twin villages of Nawton and Beadlam

Local Information

Nawton and Beadlam are twin villages that sit beside the busy A170. They belong to the civil parish of Kirkdale in The Ryedale District of North Yorkshire.  Both villages share the local Ryedale School, village hall, St. Gregory's Minster, a playing field, the unusual bus shelter (where both villages converge), a community wildlife garden and a large wood called The Howl.

Nawton has the added benefit of a Public House, Primary School, Nawton Grange Cricket Club, Football Club, fish and chip shop and a carpet warehouse, whereas Beadlam can now boast it's very own Indian Restaurant.

Things to See and Do

If you're wondering what to see and do, in and around Beadlam and Nawton, there are lots of suggestions below that may help you. Check out the following places...

Nawton and Beadlam Wildlife Garden

Nawton and Beadlam Wildlife Garden

The Community garden was opened in 2000 and not many visitors will know it exists as it's hidden behind the Cricket Field at Nawton.  If you go through the main gates of the Playing field and walk diagonally across to the other side there is a little wooden gate.  You will see a sign saying 'Nawton and Beadlam Wildlife Garden'.  Please keep an eye on children as there is a pond hidden in the middle, amongst the overgrown grass and bushes!

Nawton Cricket field

The Cricket Field

The Cricket Field plays host to cricket, football and tennis, as well as having two playgrounds. There is one for infants which is fenced off and an open one for Juniors. Plenty of space for the children to run around in! In the top far corner you will see a tree. This was planted after the new Primary School was built.

The Howl

Beadlam/Nawton - The Howl - It can get a bit muddy in places so wear the wellies or some sturdy shoes!  It's a lovely walk and if you have a dog it will get plenty of exercise. Start at the top of Howldale Lane, (opposite the unusual bus shelter), walk right through the wood and when you eventually reach a road, turn left and it will take you back all the way to Beadlam.  Allow over an hour. There is a story and video about The Howl on the Memories page.

Hold Cauldron

Hold Cauldron Mill

Hold Cauldron is set down in a valley. To get to it either by car or on foot, take the road to Kirkdale then turn left up Skiplam Road, then first right down to Hold Cauldron. It's a steep hill which leads you over a bridge at the bottom.

RCAF /RAF Wombleton

RCAF/RAF Wombleton Aerodrome and Memorial

The disused airfield is on the outskirts of the small village of Wombleton.  It used to be the home of 6 Group, under the RCAF for training purposes and also the HCU 1666.

The Memorial is dedicated to the RCAF Canadian Group 1666 of Bomber Command and also to the men and women of the RAF and WAAF who served at Wombleton during the Second World War.

Go down the Main Street of Wombleton and follow the road until it splits into two.. Common Lane and Moorfields Lane..you should see the memorial right there by the roadside, then continue left down Moorfields Lane to the aerodrome.
