I've been very busy the last couple of months restoring old family photographs for another of my websites at http://www.acandleinyourname.com and for this one. I originally wanted to scan them onto the computer and then save them on to a disc, but when I saw how damaged some of them were, there was only one direction to go... that of restoring them. As I hadn't time to get to grips with the likes of Photoshop I had to use a 2006 version of photo editing software we had instead. Having to do things pixel by pixel was very time consuming, but the rewards are there at the end when you can see what a difference a few hours of hard work make!
The old photographs stored in sticky back albums were the most damaged and I was thankful I'd taken them out when I had. Perhaps if you're reading this you may want to check yours. Take a couple of random photos out of the album and scan them in the computer. You may have a nasty surprise. Old photos that look 'ok' in an album may actually require urgent restoration. You can see some before and after photos below...
Here you can see a lot of discolouration, especially in the sky area and what appears to be a diagonal tear. It's actually a crease in the photograph.

Here's the same photo after I restored it!

A photo of my Dad (right) taken at Wombleton Airfield...

.. and after I restored and cleaned it up.

The photo which shows my Uncle Noel (left) was badly damaged with a large piece of it missing ...

.. and here's the same photo after some serious restoration!

A photo which shows my Uncle Vinty (bottom left) appears to have a large tear running down the middle. This is actually a crease. I had to rebuild part of the girl's face as it was missing where the crease was.

This is the restored version.

Another badly damaged photo. This took a long time as there was the border which had writing on and also the edges of the actual photo had to be straightened and put in. I also had to deal with the crease in the upper middle.

The restored version...
